The temperate climate of Waiheke Island seems to draw those with a passion for Mediterranean-style architecture, from Provencal gites to Tuscan villas. "Waiheke is a place where people build their dream homes," says Vicky Savage, who has done just that on the island. But Vicky and her husband Tim passed over the typical country-style villa for a modernist house. Minimalist and serene, the glass and concrete house perches on a hill that descends steeply to Church Bay below. It's deceptively simple indesign with three sides that wrap around an internal courtyard with a lap pool at one end. A row of columns overlooking the pool draws the eye out and beyond to the horizon, creating a clever play of shadow and light. The monochrome pale grey of the walls forms a sharp contrast with the technicolour views of nature framed in the large windows.
