As a student in adult nursing, caring for patients with continence problems is part of my everyday practice. However, I was not aware of the scale of continence problems and the effect these problems have on individuals' quality of life.Reading the article has increased my knowledge of the risk factors associated with incontinence, such as admission to a nursing home, poor general health, ageing, obesity and cognitive impairment. Continence problems are also likely to be exacerbated during a hospital stay as a result of sharing toilet facilities and being unable to get to the toilet as a result of reduced physical mobility. It is important to have the knowledge and skills to be able to improve outcomes for patients with continence problems.
