Government plans to place criminal sanctions on healthcare providers that he to patients about harmful errors will also support nurses who raise concerns, according to patient safety campaigners.Health secretary Jeremy Hunt announced plans for a statutory "duty of candour" on all health and care organisations as part of last Tuesday's government's response to the Mid Staffordshire Foundation Trust Public Inquiry report.It will require healthcare providers to tell people "if they believe treatment or care has caused death or serious injury, and to provide an explanation".Its introduction is one of the aims of the Speak Out Safely campaign, launched last month by Nursing Times to strengthen protection for staff and increase honesty and transparency in the NHS.
