While trumpeting an emphasis on patient involvement in service development and decision making, the NHS still adheres to a biomedical approach to care and treatment.Research has shown that personal health budgets (PHBs) are cost effective in helping people manage their own health and improve quality of life. Yet many health professionals still struggle to accept that a trip to a theme park, for example, may improve a patient's mental health more than any number of prescribed medications.
