Despite developments in the nurse's role, wound healing remains a fundamental aspect of care. This article has increased my understanding of the basic principles of wound healing and has enabled me to make a clear link between theory and practice. The learning outcomes encouraged me to reflect on my knowledge of the physiology of the skin.The skin is the largest organ in the body. It helps to protect the body from micro-organisms, is involved in vitamin D formation and helps regulate body temperature. Another important function of the skin is that it heals itself when it has been damaged.Knowledge of the basic principles of these functions can be applied in a variety of situations. In my community placement, much time was spent managing wounds. Most patients I cared for had wounds that needed assessment, cleansing anddressing. This was a valuable experience for learning about wound care. However, had I read the article at the time of placement, I would have been able to provide more informed care.
