Prescribing powers restricted as trusts drag heels on guidance

Nurse prescribers are being prevented from using their full prescribing powers because NHS trust managers have failed to draw up essential guidelines.Non-medical prescribers have been able to access the full British National Formulary (BNF) since May 1, with the exception of afewcontrolled drugs.But when some nurse prescribers wen' to work last week they were told that, despite plenty of notice, trusts had not put together clinical governance policies that would allow nurses to use the BNF.At the Non-Medical Prescribing conference in London last week, delegates said they had received letters from their trusts tel ling them not to use their new powers until the legal policies were in place.
