International Union of Nutritional Sciences (IUNS): a vision of the future

The science of Nutrition was born early in the 20th century. IUNS emerged on the global nutrition scene mid-century to provide an organization with a mission to facilitate scientific exchange internationally. IUNS has steadily grown in countries represented and in stature among other international agencies in nutrition and scientific unions. Although several international groups representing subspecialties in Nutrition and Nutrition Science have formed, IUNS remains the only overarching spokesperson for nutrition in its broad context. Thus, as the new millennium is launched, IUNS is uniquely positioned to echo voices from the entire spectrum of concerns related to nutrition, health and development in industrialized countries and those countries in early and mid-stages of industrialization. Development in communication technology has and will continue to greatly facilitate the potential for IUNS to serve the global nutrition community more effectively and efficiently. Affiliations of IUNS with international agencies and other scientific unions potentially can facilitate emergence of IUNS as a major source of science-based evaluations for influencing international programs and policies to enhance human and international development.
