Acute vanceal haemorrhage

As a nurse with a background in gastroenterology, the article was a reminder that nursing management is key to successful resuscitation and recovery of patients presenting with acute variceal haemorrhage - often sudden and explosive bleeding that is frightening for the patient. Damage to the liver over time may cause hardening and shrinking, known as liver cirrhosis. One of the complications of liver cirrhosis is portal hypertension, and varices can form with worsening hypertension. Appropriate management of these patients is important since haemorrhage can lead to shock and even death if not treated quickly and effectively.
