New Ideas in Theory Development in Nursing

An idea is a living thing. The Illustrated Oxford Dictionary (2003) offers the following definitions of the word idea: "al. A conception or plan formed by mental effort 2. A mental impression or notion; a concept b. a vague belief or fancy 3. An intention, purpose, or essential feature. 4. An archetype or pattern as distinguished from its realization in individual cases" (p. 403). Ideas, as conceptions, mental impressions, or intentions bring alive transforming changes in the world around us. Jason Silva (2012), a filmmaker and futurist, suggested that "big ideas should get people high" (para. 3). Silva created short videos on ideas. He called these idea videos "shots of philosophical espresso" (para. 4). Silva's premise is that we as thinkers need to develop the ability to question our own habits of truth. Silva posited the following: What we require is a bold new attitude and a sense of humility that accepts the ambiguity of many of our so-called truths, habitual thought patterns and cultural reality tunnels. By accepting the need to constantly de-condition our thinking to approach the world with new eyes, we can reconnect with our sense of awe and wonder, (para. 21) The following article by Rosemarie Rizzo Parse approaches the world of nursing theory with new eyes. Dr. Parse outlines a new humanbecoming paradigm in nursing and presents new thinking on issues of quality of life. These new big ideas for nursing and humanbecoming provide us all with a shot of philosophical espresso.
