Last month's RCN congress could not have happened at a more turbulent time (news May 1). Nursing is having such a bad press and much of what is fundamental to our profession is being attacked. The Francis report into appalling care at Mid Staffs is alive and raw in our minds. We know there needs to be change, but where will the investment come from to implement it? The government has tabled recommendations on nurse training and safe staffing levels, with little consultation with those who are on the front line. We need to appreciate what is good about nursing, but we should also reflect on the failings in nursing care. We are all accountable for what we do and for what we see happening around us. If we notice poor patient care, we must let others know.
