Health policy is often the last thing on the minds of nurses and nursing students. Policy courses are sometimes either eliminated or relegated to a very small proportion of the curriculum. The connection between the working lives and effectiveness of nurses and good health outcomes and quality of life with policy needs to be made more explicit. Moreover, scope of nursing practice issues, persons' access and insurance coverage options, health industry regulatory and infrastructure patterns, and nursing education requirements for accreditation all are influenced by the policy generated to order, maintain, or change healthcare practices and processes.
