Lessons of history, Part I: Seekers of truth.

History provides us with lessons for living. History provides us with examples of individuals who have dared to dream of creating a better world-and have proceeded to do so by their productivity and examples of creativity and heroism. Laura Rendon (2000), in an address to the Association for the Study of Higher Education, began with an invocation to what she termed "the Seekers of Truth" (p. 1). Rendon began her address with the following:We honor the Seekers of Truth of the Past-all of you who have gone before, our ancestors and our teachers. May we carry on the legacy you bequeathed us. We also honor the Seekers of Truth of the Present-all of you with whom we live, work, love, and share out passion for knowledge. Last, we honor Seekers of Truth of the Future-all of you who will come after us on this earth. Though we cannot hear your voices or see your faces, may we remember that we are your ancestors, as we seek to connect our scientific mind with the artistry of our spirit.
