Effects of tuna bone and herbal extract on bone metabolism in ovariectomized rats.

There is a need for natural substances as food and dietary supplements that improve skeletal health. This study examined the effects of herb extract addition on bone metabolism of ovariectomised rats fed a diet with tuna bone as a source of calcium. The herb extract included Rehmanniae radix and Angelicae gigantis radix. Citrated tuna-bone powders with supplemental herb extracts maintained calcium retention and bone mineral density of femur. Results indicated that tuna-bone powder can be a good source of calcium, and the authors conclude that it was effective in maintaining skeletal metabolism of ovariectomised rats when fed in the form of citrated or herb extract-supplemented diets.
