Nutritional aspects of bone health: current focus and future directions. A review of conferences in 2000/2001

With the growing recognition of osteoporosis as a major public health problem and the crucial role that exogenous factors play in both the development and maintenance of bone health throughout the lifecycle, a number of key osteoporosis conferenceswere held in 2000 and,2001. This report reviews the important scientific papers presented which focused specifically on the influence of diet on the pathogenesis and treatment of this disease. Details of the conferences are as follows: 7th UK Osteoporosis Conference (Bath, UK, 10-14 April 2000); 4th International Symposium on Nutritional Aspects of Osteoporosis (Lausanne, Switzerland, 17-20 May 2000); 2nd World Congress on Osteoporosis (Chicago, USA, June 2000); 22nd Annual Meeting of the American Society of Bone and Mineral Research (Toronto, Ontario, Canada, 22-26 September 2000); 1st Joint Meeting of the International Bone and Mineral society (IBMS) and the European Calcified Tissue International Society (ECTS) (Madrid, Spain, 5-10 June 2001); 23rdAnnual Meeting of the American Society of Bone and Mineral Research (Phoenix, Arizona, USA, 12-16 October 2001).
