Commentary on: Vessey, J.A., diFazio, R.L., & Strout, T.D. (2013). Youth bullying: A review of the science and a call to action. Nursing Outlook, 61, 337-345
To the Editor: As a student of health studies and future nurse at Utica College (Utica, NY), I was very interested to read the recent article in Nursing Outlook about youth bullying (Vessey, DiFazio, and Strout, 2013). I am currently studying to become a nurse, and I believe that nurses can play a major role in preventing bullying as well as assisting young people who have been involved in bullying. School nurses especially can be part of the first line of defense for students who have been bullied, providing investigation, interventions, and treatments (Jones, Waite, & Clements, 2012). I believe that many parents, teachers, and community members are still unaware of the serious health effects of bullying described in the article by Vessey et al. It is my hope that this type of information be broadcast and distributed to every school principal, teacher, nurse, and parent of school-age children. Creating awareness of the physical and mental effects of bullying is an important step in dealing with this very real issue in schools.
