Open letters are sometimes like those lengthy "broadcast" holiday updates. It is always a good idea to figure out if it is relevant before reading the whole thing. So, before we go too much farther, let's figure out whether you want to continue reading this letter. If you have answered yes to any of these questions, this letter is written for you. You see, these are the questions that led me to become the 2012-2013 Institute of Medicine (IOM) Distinguished Nurse Scholar-in-Residence, a privilege made possible through the 20+-year partnership between the IOM, the American Academy of Nursing, the American Nurses Association, and the American Nurses Foundation.
