The lattice gauge models with fermion chi and scalar matter phi fields, which in the strong coupling phase confine and break dynamically a global chiral symmetry, are reconsidered. In these models fermions exist as neutral bound states of the fundamental fermion and scalar, F = phi chi. Their mass is generated dynamically by a shielded gauge mechanism. The scalar field phi induces a second order phase transition. Therefore the mechanism might well exist also in continuum. If so, it could be considered as an alternative to the Higgs mechanism, provided the dynamical properties of chiral gauge theories with fermions and scalars are similar to those of the vector-like model we investigate on the lattice.
