Properties and Structural Characterization of Oxidized Starch/PVA/α-Zirconium Phosphate Composites

Two series of composites, i.e., polyvinylalcohol (PVA)/oxidized starch (OST)/exfoliated a-zirco-nium phosphate (POST-ZrPn) and PVA/starch (ST)/exfoli-ated a-zirconium phosphate (PST-ZrPn), were fabricatedusing a casting and solvent evaporation method. The com-posites were characterized by Fourier transform infraredspectroscopy (FT-IR), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA),differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), wide-angle X-raydiffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM),tensile testing, and moisture uptake. Compared with PST-ZrPn, POST-ZrPn films with the same component ratioshowed higher tensile strength (σ_b), lower elongation atbreak (ε_b) and improved water resistance. Additionally, in the POST-ZrPn series, σ_band ε_b increased with an increasein α-zirconium phosphate (α-ZrP) loading; however,higher α-ZrP loads resulted in the aggregation of α-ZrPparticles. Compared with POST-ZrPO, the values for σ_b, ?_b,and water resistance of POST-ZrP3, containing 1.5 wt α-ZrP, were increased by 128.8, 51.4, and 30.2,respectively.
