Tensor analyzing power T-20 for d up arrow +C-12 --> pi(+/-)(0 degrees) + X has been measured with a polarized deuteron beam from 6.2 to 9.0 GeV/c at a pion momentum of 3.0 GeV/c. The present experiment focuses on "cumulatively produced pions", which are produced beyond the kinematically allowed limit for a free nucleon-nucleon collision. The measured T-20 values turn out to be close to zero giving disagreement with our calculations which are based on a single NN --> pi NN interaction and take account of the internal motion of the nucleons in the deuteron.
