AUSTRALIAN AND NEW ZEALAND OBESITY SOCIETY 17TH ANNUAL SCIENTIFIC MEETING 23-25 OCTOBER 2009, MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA

The 2009 Australian and New Zealand Obesity Society (ANZOS) held their 17th Annual Scientific meeting at The Sebel-Citigate Hotel in Albert Park, Melbourne. The theme for this year's event was 'Obesity: Progress through partnerships', reflecting the need for health practitioners, academics and industry to work together to address the growing public health issue of obesity. There were over 63 poster presentations and 50 oral presentations in several free communication sessions throughout the proceedings.The first day of the program consisted of a diverse workshop schedule with a broad range of themes such as 'workplace settings for obesity prevention' and 'the role of pharmacies and pharmacists in weight control'. One of the conference highlights was the 'early career' workshop, during which prestigious scientists such as Associate Professor Amanda Sainsbury-Salis (Garvan Institute, Australia) and Professor Joe Proietto (University of Melbourne, Australia) spoke openly about the challenging and rewarding nature of a career in the research setting.
