This talk reviews, in their historical setting, the Bielefeld conferences on the statistical mechanics of quarks and gluons, and quark matter formation and heavy ion collisions, in the early 1980's, and then proceeds to discuss two noutstanding issues in the physics of dense matter: the confrontation of observed neutron star masses with theory, and the effect of unscreened transverse color-magnetic interactions on the quasiparticle structure of quark-gluon plasmas.
