Navigating new territory: Lecture in honour of Cheryl Rae, formerly Principal Nutritionist, Northern Territory Health

When I started as rural dietitian in Alice Springs in 1988, Cheryl Rae had been Principal Dietitian in the Northern Territory (NT) for a decade and she was renown as a leader in nutrition, and as a mentor and champion of dietitians and nutritionists working in remote Australia. Her colleagues talked of her innovation, her integrity, her passion for her work - balanced with a huge sense of fun and a talent for living life to the full. Cheryl left the NT after a career of nearly 30 years and now enjoys a well-earned retirement in Queensland. Before I begin, I would like to first acknowledge the traditional elders and leaders of the Larrakia people on whose land the 2009 Dietitians Association of Australia (DAA) Conference was held, and to acknowledge all the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, the first people of Australia.
