The timing belt tensioner applies tension to the timing belt for the camshaft drive in an automotive engine. Recently, automatic tension adjusting capability has become popular and NSK has developed a compact, light-weight and smooth acting auto-tensioner by a multi-disc damper with high viscosity silicone oil. The auto-tensioner absorbs tension fluctuation by a damper in the pulley bearing. As a result, automatic tension adjustment is provided without changing the design of conventional fixed-type tensioners. NSK obtained good results on timing belt noise when reviewing the new auto-tensioner design. This report explains the structure, performance features and characteristics of these autotensioners.
