Canada Ends Ban on U3O8Exports to China

Canadian producers will be officially allowed to export uraniumconcentrates to China under a protocol concluded last week duringCanadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s visit to China.The protocol, which supplements a 1994 Canadian-Chinesenuclear cooperation agreement allowing Canadian uraniumfuel assembly exports to China, was spurred by the 2010 contractsbetween Cameco and China Guangdong Nuclear (CGN)and China National Nuclear Corp. (CNNC). Those obligate theCanadian producer to supply CGN with up to 29 millionpounds U3O8 through 2025, and CNNC subsidiary ChinaNuclear Energy Industry Corp. (Cneic) with 23 million lbsthrough 2020 (NIW Jun.28’10).
