"We have rejected the proposal," West Bengal's Power Minister Manish Gupta told the state legislature Aug. 17, referring to the controversial Haripur project, for which the national government wants to build six Russian VVERs. The state's new government last week pledged to kill the early-stage plan for Haripur, a fishing village near energy-hungry megalopolis Kolkata. Some 100,000 people live at the site, said Gupta. "They will have to be displaced if a nuclear plant has to be set up. This is not a practical proposal" (p3).
