MAXIMIZING VALUE and minimizing waste while using fewer resources is the premise of Lean methodology in healthcare. Implementing the principles of Lean can be very powerful in creating an environment of excellence. Although the word "Lean" conjures ideas of "trimming fat" and "elimination," Lean methodology doesn't involve deleting resources or cutting staff. The premise of Lean principles is to maximize efficiency while minimizing excess steps, otherwise known as "waste." This article explains Lean principles and discusses how we successfully applied them to improve processes in our new ED.
