Repository Effort Recycles Old Idea with New Tactics

The consultation process launched this week by South Australian Premier Jay Weatherill over the idea of hosting a geological repository for spent nuclear fuel (SNF) is a world away from what happened nearly two decades ago, when similar plans from Pangea Resources International to develop a repository in Western Australia were scrapped thanks to strident public opposition. But while the strategy, tactics and consultative philosophy of repository proponents in either case are starkly different, the long-term goal and several of the key players are the same.
