摘要

In perhaps its boldest contribution yet to the climate change debate, the International Energy Agency (IEA) said this week that the global energy system is in danger of collapse without major political reforms — especially a greenhouse gas reduction pact and the elimination of fossil fuel subsidies. The agency’s latest World Energy Outlook, released on Wednesday, warned that from now through 2100 the world’s entire “carbon budget” — the amount of fossil fuels that can be burnt while safely keeping global warming below 2°C — will be consumed within the next 25 years. That will occur even in the report’s base case scenario, with carbon-free renewables and nuclear expected to reach a combined 45% market share in power generation by 2040, up from 31% now.
