Can the CAP1400 Meet SNPTC’s Timeline?

After this month’s apparent breakthrough on the reactor cool- ant pumps (RCPs) designed for China’s first-of-a-kind AP1000s, developers of the CAP1400 design derived from the AP1000 are now eager to see progress at the inaugural CAP1400 project planned for Rongcheng, Shidaowan (Shidao Bay) in Shandong province. Even though the demonstration CAP1400 plant has yet to obtain final approval from China’s State Council, developer State Nuclear Power Technology Corp. (SNPTC) believes the first-of-a-kind project could be connected to the grid by the end of 2019. Industry sources are skeptical, noting the lack of a detailed CAP1400 design.
