We were provoked by Lyn Gardner's recent appraisal of Benner's legacy to re-read "From Novice to Expert: Excellence and Power in Clinical Nursing Practice" for ourselves. As Gardner says, this book has been highly influential in nurse education and this influence has spread far beyond those who have actually read the book. We were prompted to contemplate why this might be and to highlight further elements of Benner's legacy.
