摘要

Can compassionate care be taught? Pre-registration nursing standards and competencies suggest that not only it can be taught but it should be included in the core curriculum and nurses should be registered on the basis of having a compassionate approach to care planning and delivery. However, some authors argue that these compassionate traits are inherent rather than developed: some argue that compassion can be taught, whilst others say it cannot. The evidence remains equivocal (Edinburgh Napier University and NHS Lothian, 2012; Ballat and Campling, 2011; Gilbert, 2010; Chochinov, 2007).
