During the Eocene, at least since the Lutetian stage, the Hessian Depression was subsiding. At first, the sedimentation started with lakes and lignitiferous swamps. During most of the Oligocene, the area was inundated by the sea, which connected the marine regime of Northern Germany to the Mainz Basin and the Upper Rhine Rift Valley. Starting from the latest Oligocene and during the Miocene, freshwater lakes and swamps regained the area, which was also an area of active rifting. Basaltic volcanism started at 20 Ma ago, reached its main activity around 14 to 13 Ma, and terminated around 5 Ma. Sediments of Late Miocene and Pliocene ages are found at restricted localities.
