Northwest chip prices nudged up a bit in January; mill inventories lower but sufficient in early 1Q

Softwood fiber prices were stable to modestly higher so far in the first quarter across the-Northwest, gradually extending an uptrend since mid-2013. Most of the-recent small gains, where they occurred, came on more costly pulp logs, up $2-4/green ton, compared to the fourth quarter. Prices for sawmill chips, meanwhile, were up for some, but mostly unchanged overall, quarter-over-quarter.
