Improving the economics of potato production through irrigation

Reasons for the marked reduction in potato production in Eastern Germany over the period from 1989 to 1997 are discussed. Results are presented from calculations on the effects of irrigation on yield and revenue, the efficiency of potato irrigationand the cost of irrigation. The results showed that in areas of low rainfall (600-650 mm per annum), potato production efficiency can be improved by irrigation. However, the positive effects of irrigation were found only on light soils [loamy sand], andnot on loess soils.
