Bacterial ring rot. Disease development in the field in relation to intensity of infection, weather and maturity group.

A 3-year study (2002-04) was carried out in Germany on the disease development of Clavibacter michiganensis subsp. sepedonicus in potato. There was no 'typical' course of tuber infection. The intensity of infection of the seed potato appeared to have the greatest influence on the verifiability of the pathogen, yield and symptom form. Local climatic conditions played a very small or no role in the occurrence of the disease, so in areas where it occurs repeatedly, infection is not due to site conditions but to some other factor(s). Infection could develop and progress as quickly in late-maturing varieties as in middle-early-maturing ones. The findings confirmed that control measures must be continued..
