A Sustainable Farming Fund (SFF) project investigating the sustainable use of nitrogen on Hort16A began in September 2004. The trial is located on a high performing Te Puke orchard situated on a deep, pumice derived Kaharoa ash. Preliminary findings in the first year of the trial suggested reduced N application had a positive impact on fruit quality and no significant detrimental impacts on yield or return bloom. The findings from the first year are available in the Sept/Oct 2005 New Zealand Kiwifruit Journal (Mills et al., 2005). Here we present data outlining fruit quality impacts following the second year of the trial and also discuss the impact that N application rate has on the uptake and accumulation of other macronutrients including Ca, K, P, S, and Me.
