Novel idea for passion vine hopper control

Terry Newlands was one of six orchardists funded through the 2008/09 ZESPRI SmartKiwi Programme. By modifying his sprayer and attaching a large plastic sheet the "batwing", Terry successfully trapped adult Passion Vine Hopper insects as a novel control method. Terry Newland has been growing kiwifruitfor 14 years, with both conventional GREEN and ORGANIC GOLD fruit. Recently he has become increasingly concerned at the growing levels of sooty mould being found on his kiwifruit. In particular, the number of Passion Vine Hopper (PVH) in his orchard seemed to be making a resurgence. In addition to this, the only acknowledged chemical control for PVH (diazinon) was removed from the ZESPRI Crop Protection Programme in 2007.'
