For practical purposes a stone terrace would work very well along this side of the house so that the connection between indoors and out is relatively uninterrupted, even on days when the grass is wet. Uniform slabs (normal dimension 450 x 450mm) can be selected in a tone that is sympathetic to that of the house. These are best laid on a base of compacted builder's mix and then haunched with concrete along the outer edges. Pavelock sand or a dry mix of one part cement powder to six parts washed sand can be brushed between the slabs to firm them up.
