Colour scheming: Clever ways with colour set this garden apart

There's so much to learn from Morag Deeley's little Havelock North garden about the use of ; colour and foliage that it's hard to know where to begin. Let's start with the garden at the front of the house, viewed from the living room, which has apricot coloured walls. The flowers and foliage of this garden have been chosen to tone in with the interior. The green leafed, dark red flowered Dianthus barbatus 'Sooty' is a remarkable feature. In spring it combines dramatically with 'Black Parrot' and 'Black Diamond' tulips. When the tulips finish, their foliage is largely obscured by Dianthus barbatus 'Sooty', which carries on flowering merrily. By this stage the foliage of an ornamental grape, with grey and burgundy shades, is making a different sort of combination with the dianthus.
