Blue and funky: A small space is given a dramatic and practical hard landscaping treatment which makes it user-friendly and showcases plants

Colour and bold architectural design have been harnessed to make a striking statement in a small 8m x 4.5m urban section, overlooked by neighbours on all sides. Designer Anne-Marie Powell has employed a number of visual tricks to make the most of thispostage-stamp sized space as an entertaining area and retreat. She took advantage of the enclosed urban site to experiment with dramatic effects that would look out of place in a more rural environment. The garden has been divided into three sections with distinctive functions and aesthetics. These areas have been separated by rendered walls at different levels which also work together to form a coherent whole.
