Mentha is a large genus of over 20 species of perennial herbs that are spread over many parts of the world. Because mints hybridise readily there many unnamed variations growing in the wild and in home gardens. Spearmint (Mentha spicata) dies down inwinter and then sends up soft brownish stems in spring with bright green long narrow leaves with serrated edges. It reaches about 50cm in height. Pinkish white flower spikes cover the plant in late spring and summer. Spearmint blends well with many foods, both sweet and savoury.
