Firstly, check the soil in the bed for weeds and any small plants that you may wish to move or replant back into the bed. Dig the soil over and add some granular slow-release fertiliser to replenish any nutrients that may have been used up by the previous plantings. Be careful not to damage the roots of the daphne and azaleas when digging ; around them, as this can let in disease and weaken the plants. Use a small border fork, hand fork or trowel so that you can be more delicate in your digging.
