Even before you park the car at Gordon Collier's garden near the shores of Lake Taupo, you know you are entering the domain of a seasoned plantsman. The grass on the verge - and indeed throughout the garden - has been replaced with plants, a decisionGordon describes as his greatest triumph. On the street the down to earth mix of the rare and the everyday is typical - a tapestry of verbena and low euphorbias spread below a common old golden robinia singing out for attention.
