East Hampton Town Board Approves Restrictions to Curb Aircraft Noise

The Town Board of East Hampton, N.Y., passed three resolutions designed to dramatically reduce noise complaints caused by operations at East Hampton Airport (HTO). The move is being challenged in U.S. District Court by Friends of the East Hampton Airport, National Business Aviation Association (NBAA), and companies that fly to and from the general aviation facility. The measures consist of: replacing the existing voluntary curfew with a mandatory year-round curfew on all aircraft operations between 11:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m.; extending the curfew to 8:00 p.m. to 9:00 a.m. for aircraft with effective perceived noise levels that exceed 91 dB on approach; prohibiting such aircraft from conducting more than one take-off and one landing in any calendar week between May 1 and September 30.
