Propane in hermetic refrigeration systems of appliances and heat pumps: influence and status of standards

Flammable refrigerants are in use in household refrigerators and freezers again since several years. International safety standards have been developed to cover this, with an actual refrigerant charge limit of 150g. For applications with higher charge need the situation regarding safety standards is more complex. The status of standardization is highlighted here with reference to propane, as an example.
