Neurosurgery Quarterly began as a review journal. Experts in all areas of neurosurgery were chosen by the editorial board and invited to create state-of-the-art reviews of important neurosurgical topics. These reviews were expected to have lasting value and new reviews were requested whenever innovations warranted. Over the years we have added shorter reviews, often based upon case reports, of important, but rare and unusual neurosurgical entities. Gradually, research articles which were thematic on an important neurosurgical topic or which could contribute to our understanding of the material covered in the reviews also were added to the list of desirable papers for publication. Currently, the journal is mixture of invited reviews written by acknowledged experts, case reports accompanied by brief reviews, experience with unusual diseases having a regional or national prevalence, and selected research papers which contribute to the understanding of all of these other categories of publications.
