It's hard to be green if you're in the red. There's nothing like an economic squeeze to test commitment to the environment. Third-word villagers cutting down rain-forests to feed hungry mouths while the ecosystem disintegrates around them are probably the extreme example, but the same basic principle applies whether the forest is in Indonesia or New Zealand - it's hard to be green when you're in the red.
