Refrigerant compressors serve as the engine for the refrigeration cycle. Applications for refrigerant compressors vary from household appliances for food preservation, heat pumps and single-room cooling to industrial refrigeration and air conditioning. The sizes for refrigerant compressors range from fractional kilowatts to several hundred kilowatts of power. Compressor designs fall into two main categories: dynamic and positive displacement. An example of a dynamic compressor design is the centrifugal compressor common in large commercial air conditioning. The three types of positive displacement compressors are the reciprocating, the rotary, and the orbital along with their derivatives.
