Like other oil- and gas-rich nations, Trinidad and Tobago's economy has ridden up and down with the world price for oil. To reduce its dependence on oil, the country now is trying to attract gas-using industry by offering natural-gas prices that are competitive with other Latin American countries, especially Venezuela, seven miles away. The National Gas Company of Trinidad and Tobago, a state-owned monopoly, is selling gas to Nucor Iron Carbide Inc. and Cliffs and Associates at below-cost prices. The original Nucor price is 0.60 per million dollars Btu (mm Btu), says Gregory McGuire, head of strategic planning and marketing at National Gas. By comparison, Caribbean Ispat Ltd., which operates two Midrex DRI modules next door to Nucor, pays 1.15-1.20 per dollars mm Btu, officials there say. The Cliffs and Associates price is unavailable.
