Republic Engineered will shutter 8-inch-bar mill

The startup of new and upgraded special-bar-quality (SBQ) bar mills is forcing Republic Engineered Steels Inc. (RES) to close the 8-inch-bar mill at its Eighth Street plant in Canton, Ohio. The mill has 135 employees, and an additional 68 may be affected by the shutdown, which will occur by early summer, the company says. The Canton mill produces hot-rolled bars in diameters smaller than 1 'A inches. RES is transferring production of bars V2-1 1/4 inches in diameter to its newer 11-inch mill in Chicago.
